San Simeon is a great jumping off point for some of the best camping experiences in the country today. Many of the central coast campgrounds and parks are bicycling distance from their nearby communities and offer amazing vistas and environments. Visitors can get close to nature and experience the many environments that make up the Central California coast. Consider the marine environment, redwood forest, river and stream ecosystems and the amazing dune environment near Pismo Beach and Oceano.

San Simeon State Park consists of two campground; San Simeon Creek and Washburn. The park is located 35 miles north of San Luis Obispo on Highway 1, and 5 miles south of the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument Visitor Center. The community of Cambria is located 2 miles to the South.

San Simeon Creek Campground

Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Pacific Ocean while camping at San Simeon Creek Campground (water + showers) or Washburn Campground (water fill-up in lower campground + no showers). This tranquil getaway has many recreational options. Beach is closed to dogs for the protection of the threatened Snowey Plover shorebird. The campground is NOT on reservations from October 1st through March 14th and open on a 1st come / 1st served system using the Self-Pay envelope system.

The San Simeon Creek Campground offers 115 campsites for tent camping or recreational vehicles. The maximum length for a RV is 35 feet. Each campsite has a fire ring and picnic table. Water spigots are available throughout the campground. Restrooms with flush toilets and coin operated showers, a dump station and water fill-up for RV’s, and pay phones are also available. Firewood is for sale from the campground host.

Washburn Campground

Washburn campground is more primitive of the two campgrounds that comprise San Simeon State Park; is approximately 1 mile inland from the beach on a plateau overlooking the Santa Lucia mountains as well as the Pacific Ocean. This is a great spot for groups who like privacy or party animals who don’t want to bum out the normal folk.
